Five Petals of the Rose
a short story
by Mokihana Calizar

A sweet challenge, a writer being herself, opens the window to the breeze of inspiration and visionary forward imagining. Not so much an 'efforting' Five Petals of the Rose is me being a writing being, answering these questions:
1. What do you stand for?
2. How does that make you feel?
3. Can you feel that and let it change you or are you set on control rather than the wholistic mindset of imparital education?
4. Do your values make sense, or do you have to compress them in order to make them fit?
5. If you were lost, would you use a compass?
A grateful and loving nod to my friend and astrologer Lara "Satori" Harris for the "homework" of those first four questions. And the fifth was inspired during the month of July when I decided to celebrate Pete (my husband) all month long rather than celebrate America's independence.
This story begins on August 2, 2020 and my thought is to write "it slant" all month long as a gift of pilina.

"We're not social realists, we're fantasists. We tell the truth, like poets, but we tell it slant -- we clothe it in symbol, archetype, and metaphor. But if we are to write or illustrate fantasy well we must do the work of understanding the classic tropes we use as best we can. Through reading. Through research. Through curiosity and sensitivity about lives and traditions far different than our own. Through building a relationship to the wild wherever we are. Know the place and the land on which you are rooted, and then move outward from there." - Terri Windling
